BOTOX® & Dermal Fillers in Cosmetic Dentistry
Botulinum toxin has traditionally been used for cosmetic purposes to improve wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. Dr. Newton has completed the required training in the administration of BOTOX and derma fillers and is proud to offer these services as part of your dental treatment plan. There are a few different types of botulinum toxin-derived treatments including BOTOX, Dysport® and Xeomin®. BOTOX has other clinical uses and can relieve chronic discomfort related to teeth clenching, and grinding, commonly called bruxism.
The action of bruxing can cause earaches, facial pain, and migraines. It can also damage your teeth by wearing them down and could even lead to pain, fractures, and tooth loss. To treat this condition, we can inject BOTOX into the muscles associated with clenching and grinding to relax the muscles. The muscles at the sides of the jaw are a common source of the problem, and BOTOX can significantly decrease or stop involuntary clenching.
Many people who receive this treatment experienced a noticeable improvement in function and much less pain. The treatment is straightforward and quick and can last 3-6 months. BOTOX treatment for TMJ can reduce:
- Nighttime grinding
- The risk of lockjaw
- Discomfort when moving the jaw
- Pain in neck and shoulders
- Jaw tension
Dermal Fillers
As we age, we lose an essential component in our skin called hyaluronic acid. This can cause a deepening of the creases between the nose and mouth and around the lips. Dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm™, are made from hyaluronic acid in a gel form, and they can be used to fill and plump those areas to rejuvenate your appearance. Dermal fillers are quick, painless treatments that can help to improve the appearance of aging skin. There are minimal side effects such as bruising at the injection sites. The results are immediate, and there is no time needed for recovery.
